A Twist on Time (Smoking Pen Press June 2025)

This intriguing anthology of twenty-one short stories will entertain and amuse.

You won’t find anything reminiscent of H.G. Wells, or of the Doctor Who series. Rather, you’ll find some unintended jumps in time, without any machines or devices. You’ll find some questionable means of travel. And – in contrast to the ‘standard’ rule that you cannot/should not change the past, you will find people from the future who come back with the goal of changing the future, and you’ll find efforts at do-overs, both successful, and not so successful.

In other words, you will see that these stories all present a twist on time travel.

Whether you take the “Read on the Run” title to heart and read these stories while waiting for the doctor’s appointment, or eating lunch, or as a quick bedtime story before going to sleep, or you sit down and consume the entire anthology in one sitting, these twenty-one short stories are worth your time, and worth reading.

This anthology includes my most-submitted, most-rejected short story, “FuturePast Associates”. I was astonished and delighted to find it was the first story in the anthology! The stories are all clever and entertaining. I was particularly taken with “Prep. Cook. Serve.” by MD Harrold, in which a food-truck operator is directed by time travelers to poison a politician to prevent a future disaster; “The D. B. Cooper Chronicles” by Edmund Fines, in which we find out what really happened after Cooper disappeared; and “On the Night of the Star Walker” by Laurel Hanson, in which a time traveler accidentally portals into a fantasy world.

Highly recommended for all fans of time-travel fiction. Read my full review HERE.
